Hurlin's Parrot Rescue: Foster Families
Keeping a network of qualified foster homes is just another way for us to help as many birds in need as we possibly can. Because of a parrot's long lifespan, the uneducated public and over-breeding in captivity, our rescue has the potential to fill up quickly at any given moment. Unfortunately this is an issue that we do not anticipate getting better for the future; the need for parrot rescue is only going to increase.
The birds we select for foster homes are based on the following criteria:
We are looking for foster parronts that can adhere to the following responsibilities:
We are especially on the lookout for foster parronts who:
We greatly appreciate your consideration for being a foster parront! Foster families are very important, and it takes a very special, compassionate person to volunteer their homes to a foster bird. It takes a large weight off of our shoulders while providing us with more opportunities to help the other incoming birds who need us.
If you would like to establish a relationship with us and work as a foster parront, please fill out the foster application below.
The birds we select for foster homes are based on the following criteria:
- Special needs: injury or medical conditions cause the bird to need more care, and would benefit from living in a quiet home environment
- The bird's age or physical appearance limits interest in adoptions
- Senior bird placement programs to match senior birds to a home with foster parronts who are 50 years or older
- Our rescue and/or quarantine room is full, and we receive word that another bird needs help
We are looking for foster parronts that can adhere to the following responsibilities:
- An in-person or Skype home check is required, depending on your location
- Fresh food and water daily, including a balanced diet of veggies, fruits, nuts and grains
- Foster parronts supply cage, food and toys, but if veterinary needs arise, our rescue is here to help (if the parrot was relinquished with their cage and supplies, that does go with them if needed)
- Keep the living environment clean and tidy
- Do not use any aerosols, nonstick cookware, perfumes, plug-ins, incense or candles as these items can be toxic to birds
- Do not take the bird outside unless in a cage or on a harness, and they must be supervised at all times
- Daily interaction and out of cage time is required
- Frequent updates on the bird must be sent to us regularly
- Since you are living with the bird(s) and will know their personalities, you must be willing to communicate and facilitate with pre-screened potential adopters that we send your way.
- Please remember that it is a foster bird and is up for adoption. Please also remember that "foster failures" happen, and you do have an opportunity to adopt if both you and the bird feel it is right!
We are especially on the lookout for foster parronts who:
- Have the ability to work with special needs birds
- Have experience working with behavioral issues
